I’ve been working on a custom card order for the last few weeks. I was asked to make about 50 small note cards for a friend who rents out their Brooklyn apartment on airbnb. I thought I’d share some of the process of creating the cards here.
After seeing some photos of the listing, I tried to tie in some of the decor, paint colors and the mid-century modern feel of the space. I was a little limited with some of the stencils and other supplies I had, so I had to get creative – sketching out some ideas and dusting off my Silhouette Cameo.
After some brainstorming (and my persistence about my love of a good watercolor wash background), we settled on a design that incorporated the Brooklyn Bridge and the sentiment “Welcome to Brooklyn.” I downloaded a font called Beyond the Mountains from dafont.com and cleaned it up a bit in my Silhouette software and set my cameo to work. I had it cut the word “welcome” for me and I then piecedĀ the letters together on the card. The “to Brooklyn” part of the sentiment I created quite easily in Word using another font I downloaded called Champagne & Limousines.
Miraculously, I also found a Tim Holtz NYC stamp that worked perfectly. This made it so that I wouldn’t have to sketch a scene of the bridge on each card, which was the original idea. Instead, I could just stamp, stamp, stamp.
I really like the final result! I love that each one is slightly different, and I think they turned out sufficiently Mid-Century modern-looking.
Only 40-something left to make!
